The School of Economics and Commerce, which gave education in the evenings was established in 1958. The first building that this school used was a samll dormitory owned by the Government Employment Agency. Later in 1969 the name of thes school was changed as “The Academy of Economics and Commercial Sciences”.
In 1971, with a nev legislation “State Academy of Architectural and Engineering” was etablished in Eskisehir. Also in 1973 a Medical School was etablished in Eskisehir unter the name of “Anadolu University” in cooperation with Ankara Hacettepe University. This medical school was the fourth higher education intitution establishment in Eskisehir, after the Academy of Economics and Commercial Sciences, the State Academy of Architecture and Engineering, and the Institute of Education which was under the authority of the Ministery of Education.
In 1982 with a parliamentary act, all the Turkish institutions of higher education were gathered under one administration. Some institutions were assebled and some had changed names. In Eskisehir four higher education institutions were united under the name of Anadolu University.
This name was chosen over “Porsuk” or “Iki Eylül” because of the fact that Anadolu University has undertaken the responsibility of speading higher education to all Turkey (Anadolu = Anatolia) through “Open Faculty”.

The current developments in mass media and satellite technology have offered nations new alternatives to solve their problems in their ever-increasing costly educational systems and offer their citizens equal opportunities in education.
The system widely known as the distance-education system makes it possible for the education to be taken to the students homes rather than improsing them into institutions. This system today is widely used to such an extent that international masters and doctorate degrees are offered through the system by utilizing satellite technology.
Anadolu University adopted this system in 1982 and this way has widened its educational scope not only in Turkey but also in TRNC, Austria, Switzerland, France, Germany, Holland and Belgium where Turkish nationals have followed associate degree and bachelor of arts degree with a student population reaching 650 000, Anadolu University is now named among the mega universities of the world.
